I was familiar with Veaone because of my interest in motion design seeing as the name has produced many great interactive pieces. However, Veaone can certainly put up quality pieces when it comes to print work. I’m particularly fond of their abstract works, such as these:

Here are some awesome mash ups of human and animal, birds in particular, for Georgie Magazine. Beautiful style, even more impressive life forms. The series is called “Bird Is The Word.”

I’ve listed numerous print processes that have become favorites in the design industry. Everyone knows what the results of these processes are, but not so many are aware of just how much work goes into incorporating these processes into designs, and utilizing them well. I’m not going to explain the technicalities of how these processes work, but rather show you some examples of fantastic work enhanced by them. Thanks to Ciara Panacchia.

Embossing / Debossing
Embossing and debossing are mechanical processes that manipulate the stock being used. Embossing produces a raised on stock while debossing produces a depressed impression.

Silk Lamination
Silk lamination provides a soft, silk-like finish, is water-resistant and tear-resistant, and complements vibrant colors.

Varnish
A varnish is a liquid coating applied to a printed surface to add a clear glossy, matte, satin, or neutral finish. Varnish types include: Gloss, matte, UV, spot, etc.

Foil
To get the gold /silver stamp, a foil layer is affixed to a certain material by a heating process.

Thermography
I’ll explain this one as it’s more rare. Thermography produces raised printing similar in appearance to engraving, but using a different process for attaining the effect. In thermography, a special powder is added to the ink that is to be printed on the paper. The printed piece is heated, causing the powder and ink mixture to dry, which in turn results in a raised effect on the paper.

Die Cut
Die cut involves cutting irregular shapes in paper or paperboard using a die creating for interesting spaces in the stock as well as fun interactions with the viewer.

Letterpress
Letterpress is the oldest printing process. In this method, a surface with raised letters is inked and pressed to the surface of the printing substrate to reproduce an image in reverse.

Silk Screening

Again, one worth explaining. Screen printing is a printing technique that uses a woven mesh to support an ink-blocking stencil. The attached stencil forms open areas of mesh that allows ink to transfer onto the material. A roller or squeegee moved across the screen stencil, forcing or pumping ink past the threads of the woven mesh in the open areas.

We’re all well aware by now of the possibilities the Apple iPad presents. But has anyone considered turning into a DJ with one? Well actually yes. When it was released, I already saw this eventually coming. This is the iDJ Music Mixing Station concept. It’s supposed to be a power-packed performance device in a dual deck layout. A DJ myself, I can understand the liking for something like this. Yet at the same time, I can guarantee this wouldn’t catch in the industry outside of start up DJs and house parties. Nevertheless, this design is nicely done, and is at least more appealing than the ion iPod decks we saw come and go.

Designed by Daniela Meloni, The Branding Comedy is a contemporary remake of the original Divine Comedy. The consumer plays god. The brands are the protagonists. Like the original Comedy, this piece is divided into three sections. In each circle are the brands, depending on their sins and virtues, their positive and negative values, or simply their position in the market. Quite an interesting, and fun, concept.

I was looking for some inspiration today and had a tough time finding it. But then, I took a gander back at some recent work I personally had completed. I had a moment. A moment where you realize you actually can create good work because you’ve done it before. It was a motivational kick. 322 was that kick.

Coming from Russia, with love (in design), is designer and illustrator Ugur Derinogullu. Ugur’s series of organic looking illustrations are beautifully created. The strokes are balanced professionally and the compositions create for nothing short of intriguing forms. Don’t settle on the illustrations though, Ugur is also well versed in identity design and branding.

Just because I’m a longboarder myself, I needed to showcase this new piece. Buddy Carr Skateboards just released L’Esigenza Della Velocita, designed by Antonio Carusone. The name translates to “The Need for Speed” in Italian and that is exactly where Carusone drew most inspiration. The beautiful graphic design as well as the color palettes used are reminiscent of race cars from the 1960s and 70s. Its simplicity also pays tribute to the past time. The design itself is based off the Golden Ratio. Furthermore the typeface is self designed as well!

I have not come across too much work from this digital artist, but Francisco Sassano has indeed recently been working on some typography. These newest experiments are all unique in their own way, and all a pleasure to look through. Don’t be shocked to see more of Sassano in the near future…
