Sherwood Forest Visitor Spectacular

Designer: Make Architects
London-based architects Make created the winning design for the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre.Make Architecture’s take seems to owe more to Tadashi Kawamata’s early work than anything in contemporary architecture. While obviously pumping up the drama in order to draw upon a child’s greatest treehouse fantasy, this is decidedly grown up architecture too. It redefines contextually-sensitive architecture, sustainable architecture, and destination architecture all at once. I felt the need to show this for the mere spectacle that caught my eye and didn’t let go…

Hydro74

Designer: Hydro74
Hydro74 is a full time design studio that helps and aids various companies in the progressive market. Hydro74 was birthed from the designs of Joshua M. Smith back in 1994. Hydro74 has grown to meet the challenges faced by working with the style demands of the market. In turn, Hydro74 has helped revolutionize some forward thinking in the market and help establish trends.

Gorilla Artfare

Designer: Gorilla Artfare
Formed in 2006, Gorilla Artfare has become one of the most interesting blogs in my opinion. Labeled a “collective,” somewhat like The Play Coalition, GA has proven to be another prime example of how aspiring artists and designers can collaborate to form incredible networks. Their network is 100 artists strong, ranging disciplines from illustration to motion design, from painting to sound design. GA is a great resource for individual designers, especially for those, such as myself, who want to promote strong design via archiving and showcasing multiple artists and designers in a collaborative network such as a website.

Printing Light

Designer: Nano Valley New York
This is an insane break through that could simply put all lighting – lamps, lights, candles, windows – out of business: Printing light!

Ten minutes from my hometown of Delmar, NY, there is, what we call, the young tech valley, an area located in the Niskayuna, Mohawk region. Here there has been a surge of technological and electronic research facilities in the past ten years which are now producing incredible, innovative results pertaining to all industries. This is one of them.

With the use of the more modern OLED, researchers have found a way to print light. Printed on sheets, you could tack the sheet to a wall, wrap it around a pillar or even take a translucent version and tape it to your windows. But you would need to plug them into an outlet still (as of now).

The Play Coalition

Designer: The Play Coalition
The Play Coalition is a group of aspiring designers who have collaborated to create works that have to do with the theory of design, and in particular, its social implications. However, they have a style that is portrayed in a subtle way, often creating a humor or friendly interaction with the viewer which allows for a unique appeal. Having met in college, the original founders collaborated to create something fantastic, something innovative. Their aim is to be more of a collective rather than a company, always open to new ideas, suggestions and most importantly, experimentation. Their work defines the passion and curiosity that all aspiring designers tend to possess. They are looking in new directions and playing with variation and experimentation, which in todays advanced world, can only mean impressive results in the future. Their purpose? Functionality and fun.

The Play Coalition were asked by Beta Tank to produce the packaging for their new sensory substitution lollipop, Eye Candy. Earlier this year I had touched on this product, and it has since been one of the most visited articles on FourFifthsDesign.com…
Here are some of their other projects, all which can be viewed in more detail at their website.
