Emigre

Emigre
If you are a graphic designer or typographer, or simply have any parallel interests, Emigre has been one of the best type inspirations of the past decade. I highly recommend looking into what they have produced.

Emigre, Inc. is a digital type foundry, publisher and distributor of graphic design related software and printed materials based in Northern California.

Founded in 1984, coinciding with the birth of the Macintosh, Emigre was one of the first independent type foundries to establish itself centered on personal computer technology. Emigre holds exclusive license to over 300 original typeface designs created by a roster of contemporary designers. Emigre’s full line of typefaces, ornaments and illustrations is available in Type 1 PostScript and TrueType for both the Macintosh and PC.

Emigre is also the publisher of the critically acclaimed design journal Emigre magazine which was published between 1984 and 2005.

Chromazon

Designer: SU11 Studio
Chromazon is a design installation, by SU11, whose color and construction make it an environment to behold. Did I say whose? Its organic nature makes it not just an art installation, not just a park bench: Chromazon is unnatural nature. Lately (the last ten years?) in our modern architectural design environment* competitiveness is a must. The Chromazon encapsulates the world’s new(?) radically concentrated love for design in all things.

What this project is, simply, is a design installation. It was a finalist for a museum competition**, and is roughly 9 to 12 feet tall in the higher places. Its for outdoors, people can rest under it, and read under it, and gaze at it… But alas, this installation does not presently exist in the real world, it’s only a model. **Chromazon was a MoMA/PS1 YAP 2008 Finalist.

Holeder Earphone

Designer: Yoonsang Kim
Actually the unique shape serves several purposes. It fits snug in your ear, easily loops together around your neck when not in use, and somehow prevents bacterial growth which is 700 times more concentrated in regular ear buds. If it weren’t just a concept, would you buy one?

ReGlow

Designer: Shelley Spicuzza
The ReGlow lamp from Shelley Spicuzza likes to recycle, but skips a lot of steps in between. By screwing in empty, unlabeled plastic drink bottles into the center sphere’s threaded holes, the lamp creates a burst of light and refraction. The fixture also lets you affect the color of light through the type of bottle used, so click through if you want to see the Coca Cola version.

‘Car Radio’

Designer: Sang-Hoon Lee
Move To The Radio, by Sang-Hoon Lee, shoves a radio inside a traditional wood block car toy. The volume is controlled by the wheels so if you want to turn it up, you gotta push the car along, purse your lips, and make the VROOM VROOM sound! Okay that last bit is optional but if you’re gonna play, go all the way.
