STARCK

Just a few months ago Philippe Starck was announcing the death of design. Never one to be taken too seriously, Philippe Starck is set to contradict himself once again and launch a new reality TV show. Produced by the BBC and scheduled to air on BBC 2 next year, Philippe Starck’s “School of Design” will feature ten aspiring product designers that will be given the opportunity to work alongside Starck and his design team over a period of several months. The series will be filmed at the designer’s Paris studio where the participants will be tasked to design and create ‘the next must-have products of the 21st century’ according to the producers. The production Twofour Group is looking for “aspiring designers from all over the UK, from all walks of life, as well as designers that have taken less traditional routes into design” and fighting for a chance to be the one selected to work at Starck’s studio for six months. I will be watching with morbid curiosity as we are compelled to sit through over acted “real” moments where Philippe berates young designers to the point of suicide, all to make the perfect fly swatter.

Materialized

Designer: Front Design Studio
FDS shows us what home furnishing would look like if “Dr. Seuss and M.C. Escher had a child that smoked really good pot and listened to A-Ha.”

Abraham

Designer: Patrick Frey
Abraham is a rocking chair that delivers the ultimate in comfort. The idea was to create a piece of relaxing furniture that would look as good as it feels – a rocking chair with flowing lines and an inherent sense of harmony. To achieve this, designer Patrick Frey covered a contoured tubular steel frame with stretch fabric.

Glass

Designer: Kong Fanwen
Introducing the flattest full size QWERTY keyboard to date, “No-key Keyboard” by Kong Fanwen. Consisting of just a glass surface, camera and lighting, this alternative keyboard concept will use the latest motion capture technology to watch your fingers nervously select just the perfect smiley for your online bantering.

Restless Feet

Designer: BriteObjects
Previously seen here as a concept, The Webble by BriteObjects is a great under the desk exercise device to keep your bored stems movin’ and groovin’. Made of a flexible mesh membrane floating on ultra smooth casters, you can either elevate your tired feet or pretend to be swooshing down the slopes of the Swiss Alps free styling the whole way down. Available in August for about $139.95. Not a bad price for happy feet.
